Practical AI Tools: Using AI Assistants Wisely

Learn what AI is, how to write clear prompts, and how to use AI assistants for study, work and creative projects safely, honestly and with good judgement.

About this course

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools can now write, explain, translate, summarise and draw in seconds. Used well, they are like a patient helper who is available at any hour. Used badly, they can spread mistakes, expose private information or tempt people into cheating.

This course is for complete beginners. You will learn in plain words what AI is and is not, how to talk to an AI assistant so that it gives useful answers, and how to check what it tells you. You will practise with real tasks: studying, writing a CV, planning a small business, making a poster caption and more.

We keep tool names general (for example AI chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot) because products and features change often. The skills you learn here work with any of them.

What you will learn

  • Explain in simple words what AI, machine learning and generative AI are
  • Describe the main strengths and limits of AI chat assistants, including hallucinations and bias
  • Write clear prompts using role, task, context, format and examples
  • Improve an answer by asking follow-up questions and checking the facts
  • Use AI to study, draft emails, prepare a CV and plan work without cheating
  • Protect your privacy by knowing what never to paste into an AI tool
  • Recognise AI-made images, voices and deepfakes and think about copyright
  • Write a short personal AI-use policy that keeps you honest and safe
