Freelancing and Remote Work from Africa

Build a freelance or remote career from Uganda and East Africa: choose a niche, create a portfolio, win clients, set fair rates, get paid across borders, stay safe from scams and work sustainably.

About this course

The internet allows a young person in Kampala, Gulu or Mbarara to serve clients in Nairobi, London or Toronto without leaving home. Writers, designers, developers, bookkeepers, translators, virtual assistants, video editors and many others now earn from freelancing (working for several clients as your own boss) or from remote jobs (working for one employer from a distance).

This course is practical and honest. It covers choosing a skill and niche, building a portfolio, finding clients, writing proposals, setting rates, contracts, invoicing and cross-border payment, time zones and communication, power and internet backup plans, scam protection, client management, growth and wellbeing. It does not promise quick riches. Freelancing rewards patience, quality and good habits.

Each lesson ends with an activity that moves you closer to your first or next client. Tax and legal topics are explained only in general terms, so check current rules with a qualified adviser and the Uganda Revenue Authority.
