Web Basics: Build Your First Web Page (HTML and CSS)

Learn how websites work and build your own from scratch with HTML and CSS: text, links, images, forms, layout, mobile-friendly design and a finished three-page site.

About this course

Every website you have ever visited is built from a few simple ingredients. In this course you will learn the two most important ones: HTML, which gives a page its structure and content, and CSS, which controls how it looks. You will write real code, see the result in your browser straight away, and finish by building a small three-page website for a youth group or small business.

The course starts with how the web works, so nothing feels like magic. Then you build up step by step: text and links, images and tables, colours and fonts, layout with Flexbox and Grid, and finally a design that works on both a phone and a computer.

It is meant for learners who are comfortable with a computer, files and folders, and want to start creating things online. You do not need to have written code before, but you should be patient: coding is a skill that grows with practice.

What you will learn

  • Explain how a browser, a server and a URL work together to show a web page.
  • Set up a free code editor and organise a website project in folders.
  • Write a correct HTML document with headings, lists, links, images, tables and forms.
  • Use semantic elements so that pages are clear to people and to search engines.
  • Style a page with CSS using selectors, colours, fonts, the box model and hover effects.
  • Build layouts with Flexbox and Grid that adapt to phones, tablets and computers.
  • Make a page more accessible with good contrast, labels, alt text and keyboard focus.
  • Plan, build, test and publish a small multi-page website.
