The need

Why this project matters

From 1986 to 2006 the conflict turned Northern Uganda's schools into targets and its children into witnesses. Peace has held for two decades, but the wound has not healed: today's learners are often the children of people who never finished school, living in poverty with little money for fees, uniforms or books. About 43% of pupils who start primary school do not complete Primary 7, and girls carry the heaviest load: period poverty, early marriage, caring duties and teenage pregnancy push them out.

Our response

A three-year programme that combines the two things that work best together: support that removes the cost of staying in school, and mentorship that gives a child someone to believe in them. Fees, uniforms, books and sanitary protection are paid directly to schools and suppliers, never as cash in a child's hands.

What we will deliver

What your support makes possible

  • 70 scholarships (50 day-school secondary and 20 vocational), each carried through to completion with a ring-fenced reserve for the years after the grant.
  • 1,000 vulnerable learners supported with learning kits, catch-up classes and sanitary protection, selected openly with schools, parents and the District Education Office.
  • 60 community mentors trained and supported, with mentorship and girls' clubs in 10 partner schools, holiday career camps and psychosocial support.
  • 50 teachers trained in psychosocial support, gender-responsive teaching and career guidance, and 10 schools made safer and more welcoming for girls.
  • A changed conversation in homes and villages about girls' education, early marriage and child labour, through radio and community dialogues.
Why donors choose it

Built to last, and accountable

01

It pays for what actually keeps a child in school

Fees, uniforms, books and sanitary protection are paid directly to schools and suppliers, never as cash.

02

It does not stop at the school gate

Every scholar has a trained mentor and a club, because money alone does not keep a girl in class when she is grieving, pregnant or afraid.

03

It finishes what it starts

A ring-fenced completion reserve pays the final school years after the grant ends, so no scholar is dropped halfway.

04

It is local, accountable and safe

Founded in Gulu, with child-protection, finance and anti-fraud policies, an annual audit and results reported by sex, age and disability.

05

It fits national priorities

It supports Uganda Vision 2040, the National Development Plan and SDGs 3, 4, 5 and 10.

Questions funders often ask

Good questions, honest answers

Why scholarships and mentorship together?

Because each is weaker alone. Support that pays the fees keeps a child enrolled, but a child who is grieving, pregnant or afraid may still leave. A mentor helps with the reasons money cannot fix.

Will you give cash to families?

No. Fees are paid directly to schools and training institutes, and kits are bought in bulk. This protects funds and makes sure support reaches the child.

How do you choose children fairly?

A public selection panel scores every candidate against a published checklist. Records are kept, and the funder may observe or review any selection.

What if a scholar drops out?

The mentor and welfare teacher visit within a week. If a child withdraws despite support, the place is offered to the next child in line and the reason is recorded.

Can we visit the schools?

Yes. Funders are welcome to visit partner schools, meet mentors and speak with learners and parents. Contact us to arrange a visit.
